What we do in Benin

Sustainable Community Development by the Application of SEP in Benin Project. Its inception began with the visit to the Republic of Benin by TICA’s former Director-General, Mrs. Suphatra Srimaitreephitak, to attend the International Workshop on South-south and Triangular Cooperation as Acceleration Tools to Achieve SDGs in Cotonou on 21 February 2017.  During which the meeting between her and Mr. Pascal Tchiwanou, (then Director of the Partnership Center and Expertise for Sustainable Development, Ministry of Planning and Development), led to an initiative for the Thailand-Benin Sustainable Community Development by the Application of SEP Project to be launched in Benin.  The goal is to assist the community to be economically self-sustainable based on SEP through the sending of Thai experts and Thai volunteers, organizing training courses, providing technical advice, and setting up of Community Learning Centers (Model Farmer’s Farm). The Beninese side then proposed Djakotomey as a project site. This was followed by a fact-finding visit to Djakotomey by TICA and SEP experts (Lt.Gen. Liabe Chansukko and Col. Wichai Sakhampee) during 17-23 June 2018.  Subsequently, the Project got rolling and several activities have followed since.

What is SEP?

Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP)

“Economic development must be done step by step. It should begin with the strengthening of our economic foundation, by assuring that the majority of our population has enough to live on…Once reasonable progress has been achieved, we should then embark on the next steps, by pursuing more advanced levels of economic development.”

“Being a tiger is not important. The important thing is for us to have a sufficient economy. A sufficient economy means to have enough to support ourselves…we have to take a careful step backward…each village or district must  be relatively self-sufficient.”

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej
